I have to admit that I had the Nippon-blues after traveling for one month through the land of the rising sun and landing in New Zealand. So I arrived in New Zealand, the land of the long white cloud, for the second time after nine years. Japan and New Zealand have a few common features: both are islands and both have volcanic activity. In contrast to Japan New Zealand is a very young country, only having become a sovereign state in 1848. While New Zealand offers some stunning landscapes, beaches and gorges, Japan overwhelmed me with its rich culture, its amazing food and intricate architecture. Roaming through cities in New Zealand after 8pm is a ghostly experience as many shops close at 5.30pm and city center feels deserted. Quite a contrast to every busy and active Japan. However, in one thing New Zealand is outstanding with – its customer-service. I only once came across one grumpy local, otherwise I saw all smiling-faces, cheerful greetings and the typical Kiwi easy way of life.
