The Swiss militia system is deeply rooted into society with all active soldiers keeping their rifles and guns at home. I as well have to serve one month each year in the Army. But since the end of the Cold War and the dawn of globalization, the army lost its significance. What used to be a perfect place for high-level networking and leadership education has now lost its shine as international companies do not want their staff to be away from work that long. So the Swiss Army has nowadays a hard time recruiting higher cadre and the Army is stealthily professionalized with part-time officers. Over half of young Swiss men are deemed unacceptable and escape draft and more and more young cadre pursue a professional career in the army, replacing militia cadre. It seems that the new enemies of the Swiss Army are globalization and peace.
