We humans are relational beings: if we were hermits we would not know if we were rich or poor, happy or sad, as there is no one to compare to. So if you are rich but you neighbour is richer, well, you are relatively poor and therefore unhappy. Even if you own millions you might consider yourself modestly wealthy but not rich, at least in America. For example if you have a net wealth of $10million in the USA, you belong to the top one percent earners. But in Silicon Valley, you remain still a blue collar guy: “You are nobody here with $10 million.” says a Silicon Valley employee interview in a International Herald Tribune interview. So either you log 60-80 hours a week to hope for future wealth, “be in the right place at the right time” (also coined “accidental money”) or you move away from the Valley. Or have a heart attack.
