For a long time Switzerland has been renowned for its tasty cheese with holes. What is less known is that the Swiss agricultural sector has been heavily subsided and protected, even more than the EU’s. After years of a cosy and protected life Swiss cheese producers are nowadays much more exposed to market forces: gone are the days when the state bought exportable cheese for a fixed price. Switzerland has nowadays at least partially embraced globalisation and is now exporting agricultural products to far-flung places. It has also recognised that in a country with high costs one has to focus on the premium segment. The competition so far has done wonders and Swiss cheese producers are nowadays exporting Swiss branded cheese to India and China. In Asia people are eager to try European quality food that is not poisoned or polluted. I am happy to report that we Swiss will be remember for a long time for a being big cheese producers!
