For the Christian world Christmas is one of the most important celebrations of the year. It is not only the Western world that celebrates Christmas, China does so too. According to a Chinese woman I met, especially young people enjoy the dining, the decorations and the shopping. One of the symbols of Christmas is the Christmas Tree; an icon of harmony, peace, love and safety. Is it? The Chinese artist Shi Jinsong clearly thinks otherwise as he and his assistant where injured by his Christmas Tree. And his tree is not the regular Christmas Tree anyway: it is made out of razor sharp chrome plated steel and decorated with Shurikens, Japanese Ninja weapons, that look like stars (it also spins and plays Christmas carols). Shi Jinsong wants to challenge our perception of something nice and safe and show its hidden, dangerous side. He takes a Western icon and shows its hidden potential, the yang for the ying. He already applied the same concept to chairs, desks, cradles and push-carts.
