Picture: We Swiss still know how to defend ourselves (and nice socks)!
With a long and gory history Switzerland has its fair share of battles and massacres. Nothing lends itself better for a good party as good old blood-shedding like this one: on the 11th and 12th of December 1602 French soldiers tried to invade Geneva but were beaten by the heroic Swiss. Apparently a lady by the name “Mère Royaume” spilled a hot pot full of vegetables over the city fortification on the heads of the surprised French. This event is still celebrated today in Geneva with historical re-enactments, food and the “marmite”, the famous cooking pot. A good festive meal never tastes better after some serious blood-shedding!
