In Europe almost everyone one day starts out with a selection of IKEA furniture. They are cheap, colorful and easy to combine. As one quickly finds out in one of the massive IKEA stores is that the message is clear: more is better. IKEA is ingenious of coming up with even more clever ways of cramming a lot in a little space. However, most people realize one day that IKEA is all colorful and cheap but it is not really the long-term sturdy stuff. This is where Vitra with its eye-catching factory store, designed by the famous Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, comes in the picture. Vitra produces classic furniture like the Eames chair but also commissions contemporary designs by the who-is-who of furniture design (e.g. Antonio Citterio). The Vitra shop is located in Germany very close to the Swiss town of Basel. Should you not be interested in furniture, go anyway because most buildings were designed by famous architects like Frank Gehry or Zaha Hadid.
